  • Debt Ceiling Increase Allowed by Senate
In a vote mostly split between party lines, the Senate voted yesterday to allow President Obama to raise the debt ceiling by $1.2 trillion (to above $16 trillion).  Though the House had voted earlier to oppose H.J. Res. 98, a two-thirds majority is necessary to even keep the debt ceiling the same!  Senator Dick Durbin, who ironically voted to allow the increase, said, “Don’t vote for the spending if you won’t vote for the borrowing because we know now they are linked together — they are one in the same.”  I guess the bottom line is, Congress won’t stop until they give the bankers all of our money and our children’s money and our grandkids’ money…  For those of you seek real change, check out Rep. Ron Paul, who took time off from his campaign in South Carolina to vote to oppose the debt hike and has vowed to cut the budget by $1 trillion in his first year as president if elected.
  • CNN Florida Debate
Following last night’s debate, a Quinnipiac Poll released this morning indicates Romney leading with 38% of the vote in Florida, followed by Gingrich (29%), Paul (14%), and Santorum (12%).  The latest election polls can be found on Politico’s site here.  You can watch the whole debate here.  Because I support Ron Paul for president (and he is often glossed over in the media), here are his highlights of the night.
  • Los Angeles Military Exercises Part of Bigger Plan for US Police State?
On Wednesday, CBS reported the military and the LAPD teamed up for training exercises in Los Angeles, CA.  Helicopters flew over the Lakers game and were staged at Dodgers Stadium.  With the recent passage of the NDAA, urban training exercises are a cause for concern.  Why are the military and DHS policing US cities?  Does it have anything to do with the FEMA  detention camps set up around the United States?  Infowars Nightly News confirmed the existence of a “human holding pen” at LAX, further linking these training exercises to these sorts of camps.  The Army actively prepares to keep “domestic order amid civil unrest” with its war game Unified Quest 2011.  All the signs are pointing toward martial law, a police state.
  • Protesters in Boston Demand GE Pay Taxes
According to the Boston Occupier, “On January 26th, a group of protesters marched to the front of General Electric’s offices in downtown Boston. The ‘citizen tax collectors’ impetus was the ‘-27.6%’ tax rate General Electric paid in 2010, given that they ‘posted a $11.6 billion profit” yet took in a “$3.2 billion federal tax refund for the same period’.”  Here is a great NY Times article explaining how GE gets away with it by employing former Treasury officials and extensive lobbying.  Protesters in Los Angeles also gathered to protest “corporate tax dodgers,” in this case FedEx.  FedEx pays less than 1% in taxes and spends about $46,000 a day lobbying Congress to keep it that way.  I made less than $20,000 last year but still paid $50 to the government at tax time, while profitable corporations pay little to nothing or even get a  tax refund!  I guess I just need to hire a lobbyist.  Speaking of lobbyists, opensecrets.org lets you see how much money all the 2012 presidential candidates have been getting from different groups here.
  • No Need to Panic About Global Warming
Top scientists came out with a statement today telling us all to cool our jets when it comes to global warming.  Their statement addressed the lack of global warming in the last decade, given that carbon dioxide “is not a pollutant,” and the insertion of politics into science, saying,  “Alarmism over climate is of great benefit to many, providing government funding for academic research and a reason for government bureaucracies to grow. Alarmism also offers an excuse for governments to raise taxes, taxpayer-funded subsidies for businesses that understand how to work the political system, and a lure for big donations to charitable foundations promising to save the planet.”  In other words, “Follow the money.”  We should all thank these scientists for not only pointing out scientific truths, but also the manipulation of reality to scare us into paying the kleptocracy more money.
